Journalist Robert D. Kaplan writes about many years of travels, beginning in the 1970s with his first trip to France and to his more recent sojourns in places that have been scourged by modernity. Concentrating not only on his own experiences but on the history of the lands he visits, Kaplan is also well aware of the literature of each region and also what has been written about it.
